Hestudied civil engineering at Prague\'s Czech Technical University andsubsequently worked as an official, practically until his retirement in 1939. However, he had a parallel career in musical journalism.As a musician he worked in the AcademyOrchestra, he was a choirmaster of the Technical Choir and Smetana Choir. As amusic journalist he became famous mainly for his articles in magazines andnewspapers Smetana, Independence, National Horizon, Development, Lidové noviny,Auftakt, Hudební revue and others. His contributions mainly concerned AntonínDvořák, but also other Czech composers. His most important literary work is thefour-volume monograph Life and Work of Antonín Dvořák. He is also the author ofthe musical editions of Dvořák\'s compositions. His work has contributed greatlyto the spread of Dvořák\'s fame in the Czech lands and beyond.
